“Back to Black” has received support from the Amy Winehouse Estate, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing. “Back to Black” marks the first biopic about the Winehouse, whose most popular songs include titles like “Valerie,” “Back to Black” and “Rehab.” After the singer’s death in 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning, numerous documentaries about her life and legacy have emerged, including the Oscar winner in 2015 for best documentary feature, “Amy,” as well as the 2021 BBC TV film “Reclaiming Amy.” The biopic was first announced to be in development in 2018. Lesley Manville plays Winehouse’s grandmother, Cynthia Winehouse. Eddie Marsan stars as Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, with Juliet Cowan as Winehouse’s mother, Janis Winehouse-Collins. Jack O’Connell stars alongside Abela as Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. “I write songs because I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t.” “I don’t write music to be famous,” Abela as Winehouse says in the trailer as the title song rings out.
